NCAA and Landmark 2.8 Billion Settlement with Athletes

May 28, 2024 by Novella Prep
College Athlete, General, Sports Recruiting

The NCAA and five major athletic conferences agreed to a $2.77 billion settlement in a class-action lawsuit, marking a significant shift in college sports by allowing schools to pay athletes directly. Per a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, “NCAA Agrees to Share Revenue with Athletes in Landmark $2.8 Billion Settlement,” written by Laine Higgins and Jared Diamond, this settlement ends a case that began in 2020, which sought back pay for athletes and a share of future broadcast revenues. This shift follows previous changes allowing athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness. The settlement will:

  • Enable Division I schools to distribute about $20 million annually to their athletes
  • While this settlement addresses some legal challenges, the NCAA still faces other antitrust cases and debates about athletes being classified as employees
  • The settlement is expected to be implemented by the 2025-26 academic year, but it has raised concerns among smaller conferences about financial impacts and equity under Title IX

If you are a student-athlete or a parent of a student-athlete, navigating the waters of academics and sports can be challenging. At Novella Prep, we focus on core elements in each of our areas of expertise so that holistic growth is achievable and students are ready for not only college but life itself. We have partnered with numerous athletic organizations to provide students with unique opportunities to help them reach their full potential both in school and sport. When goals are reached in school and in sport, the outcome is a capable, resilient student.
