AI and future careers
A 22-year-old drops out of computer science to become an electrician. A 28-year-old walks away from a three-and-a-half-year insurance career to train as a firefighter. A 25-year-old leaves a six-figure AI position at Amazon because he believes he’s training his own replacement. And a senior at American University, watching employer demand for AI skills nearly triple in a single year among her peers, concludes that the only rational response is to master the technology head-on. These are not outliers. According to a recent Wall Street Journal investigation and an April 2026 Axios report, young Americans across the country are making dramatic career pivots — not because they lack ambition, but because they see artificial intelligence reshaping the employment landscape faster than anyone predicted.
The instinct to act makes sense. Nearly 60 percent of Americans between 18 and 29 now view AI as a direct threat to their job prospects, according to a Harvard survey. Stanford economists analyzing ADP payroll data found a 13 percent employment decline among workers aged 22 to 25 in “highly AI-exposed” jobs since ChatGPT’s launch — with software developers and customer service agents showing the steepest losses. A Jobs for the Future survey revealed that 44 percent of Americans under 34 have considered switching careers entirely because of AI, compared to just 4 percent of workers 55 and older.
Young workers feel the pressure most acutely because they compete directly with AI for the entry-level positions that have traditionally served as the on-ramp to professional life. And many of them are responding with their feet.
The Pivot Toward the Physical
The most visible response has been a migration toward work that AI cannot easily replicate — work that requires physical presence, manual dexterity, and real-time human judgment. Vocational and community college enrollment has climbed nearly 20 percent since 2020. Applications to apprenticeship programs have surged 70 percent since 2022. Trades like electrical work, plumbing, HVAC, and emergency services have become newly attractive to a generation that grew up assuming a four-year degree and a desk job were the default path.
The logic behind these pivots holds real weight. An AI model can draft a legal memo or debug a line of code, but no algorithm can rewire a breaker panel or run into a burning building. Physical, hands-on work carries a built-in durability that many knowledge-economy roles no longer offer. For young people watching entry-level white-collar jobs evaporate in real time, that durability looks less like a fallback and more like a strategic advantage.
The Knowledge Workers Who Stay
Not every young worker responds by leaving the knowledge economy. Many who remain have adopted a different strategy: pairing deep domain expertise with aggressive AI fluency. PwC’s 2025 Global AI Jobs Barometer found that workers with AI competencies earn 56 percent higher wages on average, with AI engineering specialists commanding 20 to 40 percent salary premiums over traditional IT roles. Some startups now offer recent graduates salaries exceeding $300,000 for roles that demand both technical depth and the ability to work alongside AI systems.
The research draws a clear distinction between two types of AI exposure. Jobs involving “automative” tasks — where AI replaces human effort entirely, such as document formatting or basic translation — have experienced the steepest employment declines among young workers. Jobs involving “augmentative” tasks, where AI enhances human capability in strategic or creative roles, have held steady or grown. The difference matters enormously. Young workers who learn to use AI as a tool, rather than compete with AI as a rival, position themselves on the right side of that divide.
What the Data Actually Tells Us: AI and Future Careers
The World Economic Forum’s 2025 Future of Jobs Report projects that 92 million jobs globally will be displaced by 2030 — but 170 million new roles will emerge, many in fields that barely existed five years ago. The IMF has emphasized that new skills and AI fluency are reshaping the future of work, creating demand for capabilities that blend technical proficiency with interpersonal and analytical strengths. Goldman Sachs estimates that roughly 300 million full-time jobs worldwide could be affected by AI automation, but “affected” does not mean “eliminated.” Many of those roles will be transformed rather than removed.
The critical insight from the Stanford research deserves emphasis: the employment effects concentrate within specific occupations rather than sweeping across the entire economy. Auditing, accounting, customer service, and entry-level software engineering — roles with well-defined, repeatable workflows — face the greatest pressure. Roles requiring judgment, creativity, relationship management, and adaptive problem-solving remain far more resilient.
What Families Should Take from This
Young workers making these career pivots deserve credit for paying attention and taking action. But families with students still in high school or college should draw a more nuanced lesson than “abandon the knowledge economy.” The trades offer genuine security, and more students should consider them seriously. But the broader pattern in the data points toward a different conclusion: the young people best positioned for what comes next will be those who developed adaptability, critical thinking, and the capacity to learn continuously — regardless of which specific career path they choose.
A student who learns to think rigorously, communicate persuasively, and engage with complexity will navigate AI disruption whether that student becomes an electrician, a startup founder, or a policy analyst. The specific technical stack matters far less than the underlying intellectual formation. David Deming’s research at Harvard’s Kennedy School has demonstrated that jobs requiring both cognitive and social skills have grown significantly since 1980, while roles requiring only routine cognitive work have declined — a trend that AI has dramatically accelerated.
The 85 percent of employers who told the American Association of Colleges and Universities that critical thinking and analytical reasoning matter most in new hires were not describing a preference that AI has made obsolete. They were describing exactly the kind of capability that becomes more valuable as routine work gets automated away.
Awareness Without Overcorrection
The temptation in moments like this — when headlines announce that AI will eliminate millions of jobs within months — runs toward overcorrection. Families pull students out of liberal arts programs. Schools rush to build AI-specific curricula before anyone fully understands what those curricula should contain. Students chase the credential of the moment rather than building the foundation that will carry them through multiple economic cycles.
The young workers profiled in the Wall Street Journal and Axios made thoughtful, individual decisions based on their own circumstances. Ryder Paredes chose electrical work because he saw more security in physical skills than in a computer science degree competing against AI-generated code. Luke St. Amand left Amazon because he wanted to build something AI couldn’t replicate — an education company grounded in human connection. Jackson Curtis chose firefighting because he wanted work that no algorithm could perform. Christina Eid, rather than leaving AI-exposed fields, chose to confront the technology directly — tracking its impact on her peers, mastering it herself, and urging others to stop waiting and engage. Each of these decisions reflects real intelligence about the current landscape.
But the lesson for families with younger students should not be to mimic any single pivot. The lesson should be to invest in the kind of education that makes every pivot possible — the kind that builds range, resilience, and the capacity to think clearly when the ground shifts.

Families should take note — not to copy any particular strategy, but to recognize that the students who will thrive in this environment are the ones who learn how to think, adapt, and lead before the job market demands it.
