Executive Functioning Skills Checklist

March 13, 2023 by Novella Prep
Executive Functioning

A Quick Review

Executive functioning is known as “the management system of the brain” and includes mental abilities such as working memory, flexible thinking, self-monitoring, and emotion regulation. These important skills help us to focus, get organized, plan, and prioritize. We use them every day to accomplish our goals. At Novella Prep, as we support our students and families, we look to enhance talents with skills so that a student not only improves performance in grades or test scores, but also in understanding interests, passions, and abilities. Any issues with executive functioning can make it hard for students to focus and follow directions, resulting in their learning process being affected.

A Checklist to Guide Executive Functioning Awareness

How do we know if we have strong executive functioning skills or have some areas that need to be strengthened? The following is a brief list that may help you determine your strengths and challenges when it comes to executive functioning. We can help your child if any of these challenges are present and affecting their learning or are causing stress:

  1. Difficulty managing time
  2. Trouble prioritizing tasks
  3. Trouble organizing thoughts
  4. Confusion when rules change
  5. Trouble following directions
  6. Difficulty keeping track of belongings
  7. Difficulty starting or completing tasks
  8. Forget what was just read, or said in class discussions
